At Snyders Painting, we take immense pride in being part of Adelaide’s architectural legacy. Our latest painting conservation project at the Torrens Building, located on the corner of Victoria Square and Wakefield Street, is a testament to our dedication to craftsmanship, heritage restoration, and high-quality finishes.
This heritage-listed building has stood as a cornerstone of South Australian history since its completion in 1881. Originally known as the New Government Offices, it has served various governmental functions and, in more recent years, has been home to educational institutions, including Carnegie Mellon University and Torrens University.

The Torrens Building was designed in the Victorian Free Classical style by architect Michael Egan, later modified by John Woods, South Australia’s Architect-in-Chief. Its elaborate stonework, decorative urns, and coat of arms showcase a blend of Tuscan, Roman Doric, and Ionic elements, making it one of the most distinctive heritage buildings in Adelaide.
In 1979, the building was officially renamed after Sir Robert Richard Torrens, the architect behind the Torrens Title System, which revolutionized property ownership. Today, it remains a significant structure, housing public and private sector offices under the ownership of the Minister for Administrative Services.

With time, the Torrens Building has required careful conservation to maintain its historical significance. Co Design, the primary contractor, alongside Swanbury Penglase as the project’s architectural lead, is leading the restoration effort to preserve its grandeur for future generations.
As specialists in heritage painting and restoration, Snyders Painting has been entrusted with reviving this architectural gem. Our role in this project includes:
✅ Careful Surface Preparation – Ensuring original detailing is retained while removing deteriorated coatings.
✅ Historically Accurate Paintwork – Using heritage colour palettes and traditional techniques to honour the building’s past.
✅ Eco-Friendly Paints & Lead-Based Abatement – Employing modern, low-impact solutions to safeguard both the structure and our workers.
✅ High-Quality Protective Coatings – Enhancing longevity while maintaining authenticity.
✅ Collaboration with Conservation Specialists – Ensuring every step of the process aligns with heritage preservation standards.
In keeping with our company’s commitment to safety and ongoing training, our team has also completed Working at Heights certification, ensuring that every aspect of this project is carried out with the highest safety standards in mind. This ensures our painters can confidently navigate scaffolding and elevated areas while delivering outstanding results.
