As sustainability becomes a focal point for individuals and businesses alike, it's important to understand what it really means—especially in industries like ours. The question is, how can we apply sustainable painting practices within our own company?

To explore this further, we reached out to our suppliers and took the time to strategise ways to embed sustainable practices across Snyders Painting.

One of the key initiatives we’ve adopted is contributing a $0.15 per litre levy on our paint products to the Paintback scheme. Their mission is to divert unused paint and packaging away from landfills and waterways, transforming them into reusable resources—an initiative that directly aligns with our goal of reducing waste.

In the office, we’ve gone a step further by repurposing paint trays and buckets made from recycled leftover paint containers.

Sustainability is also a key theme in our regular discussions with Haymes Paint. Their new facility in Ballarat incorporates state-of-the-art technology that enhances production efficiency while minimizing environmental impact. By reducing energy consumption, water usage, and waste generation, they’re setting a new standard in sustainable paint manufacturing. Their use of renewable energy, such as solar power, and a closed-loop water system is a testament to their commitment to reducing carbon footprints—further solidifying them as our preferred supplier, especially with their local, Australian-made focus.

We exclusively use Low VOC paint products that meet both Australian Paint Approval Scheme (APAS) and Green Building Council (GBC) regulations, ensuring our products contain less than 1% VOC.

On many of our projects, we incorporate Dulux Coolroof or Solacoat coatings, which reflect more infrared light energy and reduce heat absorption. This technology has significantly reduced interior temperatures in dongas and warehouses, minimising air conditioning needs and ultimately lowering carbon emissions.

A sustainable and socially responsible business is built on the three Ps: People, Profit, and Planet. To act responsibly, we strive to add value to all three while maintaining a careful balance.

For People, we support our staff through training and by giving them opportunities to take on greater responsibilities, keeping them engaged and motivated. We also aim to provide steady, year-round employment, even during slower seasons.

For Planet, we’re committed to recycling and properly managing leftover paint through eco-friendly methods.

For Profit, staying financially healthy allows us to reinvest in our people and the planet. By working efficiently and controlling costs, we’re paving the way for a more sustainable future.

The key lesson I’ve learned is that sustainability isn’t something you implement overnight. Instead, it's about taking small, consistent steps. We’ve already made progress—like transitioning to digital quotes, and estimating through our digital system which cuts down on paper use—but there’s always more to do.

By focusing on small, manageable changes, we can effectively integrate sustainable painting and business practices. For painting companies, there are both easy and challenging steps ahead, and we’re committed to taking them.

At Snyders Painting, we're committed to doing our part for a more sustainable future.

By incorporating eco-friendly practices into everything we do, we’re not only delivering high-quality painting services but also making a positive impact on our planet.
